With the colder days and nights of winter even here in Napa Valley, some of our Day Spa clients wonder, why we’re all finding our skin to be a bit more temperamental. Too tight, too dry, a bit blotchy and even itchy. Our steadfast home care regime doesn’t seem so steadfast any more. A change in climate brings a change in our exposure to daily elements. Things as simple as central heating can be enough to cause drastic changes in our skin. Time to take a closer look and re-work your home skincare regime.
At Greenhaus Day Spa, we like to share 6 simple steps to ensuring a more radiant, hydrated skin.
- Evaluate your cleanser.
A tight uncomfortable skin is a sure indicator you need a gentler cleanser for winter. Try using a richer mousse cleanser or a milk cleanser in the winter months. Dr. Spiller Aloe Vera Cleansers offer a choice of either foaming gel or milk and leave the skin silky soft.
- Is your moisturizer enough?
Lighter weight lotions can be just as effective as thicker formulations, although you may want to ensure your moisturizer is providing enough moisture for you. A lighter moisturizer provides humectants and attracts moisture to the skin, while richer formulations will hold and protect moisture from evaporation.
- Add a serum.
Adding a serum under your moisturizer will boost moisture content in the skin as well as the hydrating benefits of your cream. Try Intraceuticals Rejuvenate Hydration Gel to instantly hydrate, and provide a reservoir of anti-aging nutrients. We also recommend Dr. Spiller Silk Serum with silk proteins, hyaluronic, and shisandra extract revitalize and refine skin needing extra care.
- Adjust your night cream.
If you are experiencing more surface dryness, you may need to change your night cream to enhance the skin’s natural biologic rhythms. - Take body care seriously.
Be careful not to shower in excessively hot water for long periods of time. This will rob the skin of essential oils needed to maintain the skin’s natural protection barrier function. For really dry itchy skin, use a gentle, hydrating body shampoo and finish your shower with a cool rinse. Apply conditioning body oil while still wet, then lightly towel off. This can be followed with application of a body moisturizer if needed. We suggest Olivina ultra pure body product’s with skin pampering conditioner’s 100% free of parabens and sulfates. Try the Classic Olive Oil Body Butter. Rich in Shea butter, extra virgin olive oil, grape seed oil, coconut and sweet almond this ultra soft textured cream helps to maintain the skin’s moisture balance.
- Adjust your makeup base.
The usual matte finish may look flat on a dehydrated complexion. Try a lighter formula makeup or you can simply mix a drop of eye cream into your under eye concealer, and a drop of moisturizer into your makeup base to give a more hydrated finish and coverage. Consider a translucent powder in the winter instead of a matte finish powder. For dryer complexions, eliminate the use of powder all together for a more luminous looking makeup.

With the on-set of colder days and evenings here in the Napa Valley, thoughts of warm cuddly things are coming to mind.
